L’Atavique combines a rich sense of orchard fruits and floral notes with an energetic, bracing minerality. There is a subtle brioche thanks to the extended lees aging, but the wine has depth beyond that, a salty/fruity yin and yang that is perfectly balanced with the choice of low dosage. This is a spectacular Champagne.
The three brothers Mouzon (Pascale, Phillippe, and Sébastien) tend to the Family’s ten hectares located predominately in the Grand Cru village of Verzy. As with so many others of their generation, they are thoughtful in the vineyards and the cellars. They work bio-dynamically, treat vines with organic “teas” rather than chemicals, adhere to lunar cycles - they are making wine in pre-modern methods – hence the name L’Atavique. In addition, they have also made plantings of the "archaic" varieties of Champagne grapes to expand their holdings beyond the traditional three varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier) to Arbanne, Petit Meslier, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc.
